There are so many girls like Gutthi: Sunil Grover
The man behind Gutthi: Comedian Sunil Grover was in Lucknow recently for a show, when we caught up with him. Ask him how he feels about being identified more as Gutthi now and less as Sunil, and he replies, "It's overwhelming how people have reacted to Gutthi. People now look at me and say 'Woh dekho, Gutthija raha hai!'. I've been entertaining people for so many years as Sunil, it's ironic that I had to become a woman for people to regis ter my presence. But no complaints. I'm an entertainer. People will know me by what I'm doing. If they're calling me Gutthi I'm more than happy! And if I can surpass this with some other characters I do later, people will want to know my name and that is a name well earned. I would want to do various characters in various mediums."
Inspiration for Gutthi: Wonder where Sunil got the inspiration to play Gutthi so convincingly and Sunil says, "I come from a small town on Haryana-Punjab-Rajasthan border called Dabwali, I was born there. So, we come across so many girls like Gutthi there. Literally, the pichhwade wali ladki. They are such wannabes. They want to become something in life and I love wannabes, because I myself am a wannabe. And they have the capacity to entertain me as well, so I just put it across. I've met so many such girls. I have a lot of love and respect for them. Because they are taught one thing and they follow something absolutely opposite of that, but whenever they are given a chance, they come out in their element, and how! Like they just need one moment to show their true colours and they do that with pride. And that's what I love about them. Gutthi is also that. She will grab the slightest opportunity to steal the show. And doesn't she do it?"
No vulgar jokes: One thing consistent about Sunil has been his clean comedy. "I am not in favour of vulgar or below the belt jokes. TV is not meant for adult comedies. It's a medium meant for the family and it should remain that way. That's why I am very conscious about what I say on any of my shows. I may say that a girl is sexy because it is now taken as a compliment. But the manner in which it is said should be clean and complimentary and also ethical. These are a few of my beliefs and I will always follow them," he says.
