A salute to the female power brigade on small screen
This Women's Day today, we recall characters on television that portray the strong individual on a show. Even if they play the bahu or beti, these women are playing roles that speak of how they deal with varied emotions like love, deceit, cheating, adoption, children, family values, humour, husbands, fraud and adultery in their daily lives. Women on television have always essayed the cliche character of a bahu and often been blamed of essaying regressive roles. Well, not anymore. Earlier, it was about a bahu who can never do anything wrong in her life, but currently you find women in roles that deal with issues in a different way. Here are some of the characters that stand out.
Deepika Singh Sandhya in Diya Aur Baati Hum The track shows Deepika's transformation from a palluwali bahu to an IPS officer after undergoing training. Deepika essays a career-oriented strong-willed woman who finally fulfils her dream after marriage, which very rarely happens in an Indian household.
Kavita Kaushik Chandramukhi Chautala in FIR The Haryanvi police inspector who is strict and tough with her colleagues has become popular with men and children the most. So popular is her character that Kavita was, in fact, brought back to the show when they had replaced her for a short while.
Preetika Rao Aaliya in Beintehaa In Preetika's debut show, the protagonist is forced to marry a guy she does not like. One would think that the show would go the cliche way with Aaliya behaving like a docile bahu, but it was interesting to see that Aaliya is actually strong in her ideas and makes it a point to hold her own.
Paridhi Sharma Jodha in Jodha Akbar Playing the historical character of Jodha, the character deals with the complexities involved in dealing with her husband — Akbar. She deals with varied emotions and how she finally undergoes the process of falling in love with the king.
Aishwarya Sakhuja Shikha/Samaira in Main Na Bhoolungi Her character started off playing a simple behenji who is cheated and almost killed by her husband. Loosely based on the Khoon Bhari Maang character that actress Rekha played in her film, Aishwarya returns as the ultra glam Samaira to take revenge.
Shefali Sharma Bani in Bani -Ishq Da Kalma The actress currently seen in a new avatar after she lets go off her traditional look, plays the character of a girl who is cheated by her NRI groom and comes back to take revenge.
