    Default ♥ ♥ ♥ Happy Diwali ♥ ♥ ♥

Diwali is the most popular festival associated with Hindu religion. Diwali 2009 date is October 17. Diwali literally means ‘an array of lamps’ (Festival of Lights) and symbolizes the victory of knowledge over ignorance, and goodness over evil. It further represents an awareness of God in our lives. In 2009 the Diwali dates are – Dhanteras on October 15, Diwali on October 17, Lakshmi Puja on October 17 and Bhai Dhooj on October 19.

The celebration of the five-day long festival, Diwali, begins on Aswayuja Bahula Chaturdashi and concludes on Kartika Shudha Vijaya. The first day of this festival begins with 'Dhan Trayodashi' or 'Dhanteras'. After the Dhanvantari Trayodashi the second day of Diwali is 'Narak Chaturdashi', which is popular as 'Chhoti Diwali'. The third day of Diwali, which is also called 'Badi Diwali' is the main day of celebrations of the festival of Diwali. People perform Lakshmi Pujan (worship of divine Goddess Lakshmi) on this day and offer prayers to her to bless them with wealth and prosperity. The fourth day of Diwali is devoted to Govardhan Pooja (worship of Lord Govardhan Parvat). The fifth day of the Diwali is Bhai Dooj, the time to honor the brother-sister relationship.

    Legends of Diwali

Diwali is celebrated by all Hindu communities but the reasons and legends differ from place to place and from community to community:

♥ The most important legend associated with Diwali is the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. It is believed that people lit lamps on the day to welcome Lord Rama and Mata Sita. Return of Ram is the most popular Diwali legend in North India.

♥ Another important legend is demolition of the demon Narakasur by Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama. This is the very popular legend of Diwali in South India.

♥ Lakshmi Puja during Diwali is observed as it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean on this day during the ‘samudra manthan’ (churning of ocean) by demons and gods as mentioned in the Puranas. So for the business people, the new business year begins on Diwali.

♥ In Gujarat, the day after Diwali is observed as Annakut – New Year’s Day (In 2009, Annakut is on October 18 and Gujarati New Year is on October 19).

♥ In Orissa, the lights are lit to show the path to the spirits of ancestors returning to heaven.

♥ In Bengal, Diwali is celebrated as Kali Puja. It is believed that Goddess Kali killed the demon Raktavija on this day.

♥ In addition to Hindus, Sikhs celebrate Diwali in commemoration of the release of the Sixth Guru, Hargobind, from captivity by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir. It is beleived that the foundation stone of the Golden Temple at Amritsar was laid on Diwali in 1577.

♥ For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of Moksha by the Lord Mahavira.

Wish fulfilment: Some communities believe that when Narakasur was to be killed, Lord Krishna asked him his last wish. Narakasura replied that he wanted to enjoy the last day of his life in a grand manner and Diwali was celebrated. That was the beginning and the practice continued.

During Diwali people clean their entire house and new clothes are purchased for the entire family (signifies becoming a new/better person by giving up darkness within us) and pray Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi in her three forms [Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (the goddess of books and learning), and Mahakali; Kuber (the treasurer of the gods)]are worshipped for health, wealth, knowledge and peace. In the evening, lamps are lighted around the home and crackers are burst.

Diwali is not only festival of lights, but also marks the beginning of the Hindu new year.

It is also a significant festival for the Sikh and Jain faiths. Of all the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali is by far the most glamorous and important. Enthusiastically enjoyed by people of every religion.

It is a festival of lights celebrating the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. On this day homes are decorated, sweets are distributed by everyone and thousands of lamps lit to create a world of fantasy. The festival symbolizes unity in diversity as every state celebrates it in its own special way.
