    Karva Chauth 2009

    Karva Chauth, also known as Karaka Chaturthi, is the important festival observed in North Indian states. Karva Chauth 2009 date is October 8th. It is a major fast for married women and those who want to get married soon. They offer prayers seeking long life of their husbands and marital bliss. Kava Chauth falls on the fourth day after Sharad Purnima, the Full Moon day in Ashwin month. It is celebrated on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi nine days before Diwali.

    Karwa means clay pot and chauth means fourth night after the full moon. It has great social and cultural significance and is mostly practiced in northern India.

    Karva Chauth is a fast to observe with utmost dedication. The fast begins before the sunrise and concludes after worshipping the Moon God in the night. No food or even water is avoided after sunrise. In the night, after seeing and worshipping the Moon, women touch their husbands’ feet and get blessings from them and then break their fast.

    Karva Chauth is a similar festival to Atla Thaddi, a regional festival of Andhra Pradesh which is celebrated the day before Karva Chauth.

    Karva Chauth Vrat Katha – Legend or Story of Karwa Chauth

    Karva Chauth vrat katha, story or legend about Karwa Chauth, is very important to read at the time of Karva Chauth puja. According to the legend, a woman named Karva was very much devoted to her husband. One day, when he was bathing in river, her husband was caught by a crocodile. Seeing that, Karva’s face became red and tied the crocodile with a cotton yarn and taken away that crocodile to Yama lok. Karva requested Lord Yama to curse the crocodile and send it to Narak (hell).

    But, Yama was refused and scolded karva harshly. This incident made Karva to warn Yama that she will curse him. Yama afraid with her devotion towards her husband since he knows how powerful a devoted wife would be. He sent the crocodile to Narak. And he also blessed Karva’s husband with long life and prosperity.

    The Legend Of Mahabharata

    The belief in this fast and its associated rituals goes back to the times of Mahabharata. Draupadi, too, is said to have observed this fast. Once Arjun went to the Nilgiris for penance and the rest of the Pandavas faced many problems in his absence. Draupadi, invoked Lord Krishna and asked for help. Lord Krishna advised her to observe the fast of Karva Chauth. Draupadi followed the instructions and observed the fast with all its rituals. Consequently, the Pandavas were able to overcome their problems.

    The Story Of Satyavan and Savitri

    There is the story of the Satyavan and Savitri. When Yamraj - the Lord of the death - came to take Satyavan's soul, Savitri begged him to grant life to Satyavan. When Yamraj refused, she stopped eating and drinking and Yamraj finally relented. He granted life to Satyavan

    Karva Chauth Significance – Importance of Karwa Chauth Festival

    Karva Chauth, also known as Karka Chaturthi, is one of the biggest North Indian Hindu traditional festivals. Karva Chauth is a great festival dedicated to the sacred relationship of husband and wife. Hindu marriage allocates some responsibilities and duties to both wife and husband. This festival reminds them their duties to perform certain rituals or pujas to maintain healthy and long-lasting relationship.

    As per the Puranas, wife is the protector or life-giver to her husband and as well as to her whole family. Karva Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day in Kartik month. As Kartik month is very auspicious according to Hindu beliefs and this festival has great significance.

    On Karwa Chauth festival day, women wake up early in the morning and perform ritual bath. They perform puja to Lord Ganesh, Shiva, Gauri (Parvati) and Lord Kartik (Katikeya or Subramanya). Women observe the puja for better health and wealth for their family members. On this day, mother-in-law (Sasu) offers special food ‘Sargi’ for her daughter-in-law (bahu).

    Karwa Chauth upvas vrat is most important aspect of this festival. Women observe fast right through the early morning till the moonrise in the night. They observe very strict fast that they even avoid taking water. After Chand Pooja (worship of Moon God), women break their fast and look at their husbands’ faces and touch their feet for blessings.
