Bollywood stars Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar on Tuesday received Padmashri awards in New Delhi.

The two actors were conferred the awards by the honorable President Pratibha Patil at Ashoka Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The duo were felicitated for their contribution to Indian cinema.

Present during the function were Ash’s hubby Abhishek Bachchan , father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan , and her parents. From Akshay’s side his wife Twinkle Khanna was there.

Aishwarya has made considerable contribution to Indian cinema by her talent and beauty. She’s also the first actress to represent the face of Bollywood in the West. Akshay, on the other hand, has emerged as a darling of masses over the years. He has to his credit a number of superhit films even though his last release Chandni Chowk To China did not meet expectations.

Both Ash and Akshay don’t come from families with film background and therefore made their place in the industry by dint of hard work.

At the function, Padma awards were also given to Shamshad Begum, the famous playback singer of yesteryear, and Ashok Shekhar Ganguly, director of the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India. Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar received Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour.
