Imran Khan in controversial play 'Vagina Monologues'
Actor Imran Khan ’s desire to do theatre is fulfilling with writer Eve Ensler’s controversial play ‘Vagina Monologues’.
The play consists of a number of monologues, each read by a different female actor. A recurring theme throughout different monologues is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment. Now, the play is going to be enacted in Mumbai under the direction of Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal.
And for the first time in its history since the play was first penned in 1996, a male actor is going to render one of the monologues.
Imran Khan will read out the monologue “My Short Skirt” which, a few years back, was read by Mallika Sherawat . But since it sounds absurd that a man should talk about a sexual organ that’s biologically a female’s, Imran will render the monologue in third person while a female actor will enact it on stage.
It was Imran’s friend Sonali Sachdev who inspired him to be part of the play. Sonali herself is in the cast.
With his first play, Imran hopes that even men would now be drawn towards a play which is deemed essentially female-centric.
Most of all, the play will be for charitable purpose. Proceeds from the play will go towards creating awareness towards violence against women and helping those females who’ve been victims of violence.
Haseena, the victim of an acid attack in 1999, is expected to attend the play.
