Amitabh Bachchan still an enigma at 67
The mega star celebrates birthday on Sunday!
In the times when the Khans and Kumars of the Bollywood brigade squabble over who is number one, the man arguably most deserving of the spot prefers to let his silence speak. Amitabh Bachchan may no longer be as magnetic a crowd puller in theatres as he used to be, but let’s not forget he’s in his sixties. What the relatively younger stars of today boast about, he’s already been there and done that.
As the legendary Libran turns 67 on Sunday, he also touches a new milestone - that of having completed 40 years in the film industry. It was forty years ago that a lanky young man with a deep voice first appeared on the Indian screen in ‘Saat Hindustani’. After a few initial failures he struck success in 1972, and Indian cinema was never the same afterwards.
To celebrate the four decades of Bachchanalia, producers of his forthcoming film Rann have organized a special event on Saturday in which forty clones of the superstar (they are far and many between¬) will be dressed like him and speak dialogues from the popular films of Big B’s career, like Zanjeer, Sholay, Deewar, Don, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Namak Halaal, Coolie, Sharabi, Black and Sarkar, among others.
Since Big B isn’t given to indulging in pomp and show on his birthdays, there won’t be any lavish celebrations on Sunday. But he will walk the ramp for good friends Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla since October 11 is also the opening day of the Couture Week in Mumbai.
Buoyant and vivacious as ever, Mr. Bachchan is 67 and has a life to go.
Happy Birthday, Big B.
