The Academy Awards were special this year for the Indians. Slumdog Millionaire, the film that bagged the eight Oscars out of ten nominations has its groundings in the slums of India. The Latikas and Jamaals of India watched the event with hearts filled with pride. Much has been said about the film and its actors in this column and so it is the time to tell you about the awards, the two Indians, A.R. Rahaman, the present day Tansen of Indian music and Resul Pookutty, the sound magician held in their hands with humility and pride. India once again felt felicitated and rejuvenated at the International Podium of Oscars Red Carpet for 2008. The presentation by the coy Rahaman of his two songs, 'O Saya' and 'Jai Ho' was commendable. He won the Awards for the best music and for the best song that was Jai Ho. It was praiseworthy that these two masters in their own right never forgot their roots and sang in praise of “Om” the sound that permeates through the Universe according to the Vedas and Upanishads. Rahaman never failed to seek his mother’s blessings and went on to preach love as the only emotion that made him stand erect in front of the whole world, grabbing the highest honour that he could have in life.
