Akshay Kumar arrested, released on bail in obscenity case
Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was arrested and later released on bail by Mumbai police on Monday in connection with alleged display of obscenity in public.
“Akshay, who arrived in Mumbai from abroad, surrendered before the police today. He was accompanied by his lawyer,” a senior police officer told a news agency.
“We arrested him under Indian Penal Code Section 294, which deals with obscenity in public. Since it is a bailable offence, he was released on bail,” the officer is quoted as saying.
“He was then arrested under section 294 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code for his alleged obscene behaviour,” the officer added.
In early April, Akshay, his wife Twinkle Khanna and the organizer of the Lakme India Fashion week were booked for public display of obscenity after Twinkle unbuttoned Akshay’s denim jeans at a fashion show. A Mumbai-based social worker had filed a police complaint against the superstar and his wife.
Last month, Akshay's wife Twinkle was arrested under the same charges and immediately released on bail. Akshay was out of country at that time and wasn’t arrested. He had been shooting Priyadarshan’s movie De Dana Dan in Singapore.
