Gautam Gambhir to lead India in ODI series against New Zealand

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to rest Mahendra Singh Dhoni and opening batsman Virender Sehwag for the upcoming 5-match ODI series against New Zealand which starts from the 28th of November.

In the absence of these two senior players, left handed opener Gautam Gambhir will lead the side. This is the first time that Gambhir has been handed the reigns of the Indian team.

Other senior players who have not been considered due to injury concerns are Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar.

This development comes a day after Dhoni had requested the Board to give rest to some of the players who have been playing non-stop cricket for the last six months ahead of the South Africa tour.

India will play the first Test match in South Africa on 16th of December.
