Her last rites took place at a crematorium near Peddar Road, South Mumbai, at 3 a.m, and it was a close, private affair with very few family members present.
Varsha was reportedly suffering from depression and shot herself Monday at her residence – Prabhu Kunj apartments at Peddar Road. She was 56.
A playback singer like her mother, Varsha has sung for many Hindi and Marathi movies.
She also worked as a freelance journalist as well and wrote columns for the web portal rediff.com, the Sunday Observer and the Gentleman magazine, among other freelancing projects.
She was divorced from sports journalist Hemant Kenkre.
Varsha had tried to commit suicide in 2008 and 2010 as well.
Asha, who was in Singapore to attend the closing ceremony of the Marathi International Film and Theatre Awards (MIFTA), rushed back to India last night after hearing the news.
