From the time of Mihir Virani in serials such as “Kyunki Saas Bhi Bahu Thi” to the recent “Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon”s’ Arnav Singh Raizada, the soap sagas have shown the male characters as mere cardboard cutouts who are shown to do nothing in spite of them having respectable jobs to flaunt.
Despite the fact that the satellite television reach has increased manifold since 1993 nothing much has changed about the characterization of the male actors in the serials and they continue to be props.
To prove the point take the case of Mihir Virani, Ram Kapoor, Arnav Raizada, Manav ,Viraj various characters from various serials who are all either biz tycoons or professionals in different fields have been shown to diverting all the energies in discharging their duties towards their home front rather than their professional front.
The reason for the soaps showing men as mere cut-outs is that the so- called target audience for these soaps is primarily women and hence the makers are focusing on the female characters and letting the fairer sex call the shots and while men having to take the backseats and acting as mere props willing to walk beside the woman. But no one seem to be complaining about the situation definitely not even the men.
